AEC TESOL 1 & 2 Preparation Course

TEACHING ENGLISH TO SPEAKERS OF OTHER LANGUAGES

The AEC TESOL 1 & 2 Preparation Course is an NZQA approved teacher training course in teaching English as a second language. It prepares students for the internationally recognised Cambridge TKT Qualification, which can be taken in NZ after the course. The material covers the Cambridge TKT Modules 1-3. It is also possible to cover a Content and Language Integrated Learning [CLIL] module if required.

This course is especially suitable for students with English as a second language and is taught by highly experienced teacher trainers.

Units include:

– English Language Analysis

– Theories of Learning and Teaching

– Supervised Teaching Practice

– Lesson Observation and Analysis

● Entry requirements

Students must have a sufficient grasp of both spoken and written English. English language requirements are:
*5.5 General IELTS
*5.0 Academic IELTS
*AEC Screen Test Pass

In certain cases an interview with the TESOL coordinator will also be required.

● Course Timetable

A typical course runs for at least 6 weeks from Monday to Friday, 9 am – 3 pm with extra time required for homework, assignments and lesson preparation.

You will receive 2 certificates from AEC. One shows that you have successfully completed the TKT preparation programme. The other certificate is your official report card with your marks for each section of the work done.

If you sit the external Cambridge TKT exam you will get separate certificates directly from Cambridge, one for each of the three Modules.

Course Content

Theoretical knowledge and practical skills for teaching English including:

a) Grammar, lexis, phonology
b) Teaching reading , listening , writing and speaking skills
c) Background language learning
d) Lesson planning, use of materials
e) Classroom management and student assessment

Dave Fern has a varied cross cultural background having lived and worked overseas. He’s been teaching ESOL for over 25 years at different levels and enjoys encouraging students in all aspects of life as well as in English.

Johanna Bissett has taught English for many years and has also helped train ESOL teachers for over 10 years. She has spent considerable time overseas and is passionate about helping students to have a rewarding and worthwhile English learning experience while in NZ
