Courses | Teaching English to Speaker of Other Language

We have a TKT Teacher Training Course designed specifically for students with English as a second language. This is a NZQA approved course which prepares students for the internationally recognized Cambridge TKT Qualification, which can be taken in NZ after the course. Programme is designed and taught by highly experienced teacher trainers and top classroom teachers.

● Entry requirements

Students must have a sufficient grasp of both spoken and written English. English language requirements are:
*5.5 General IELTS
*5.0 Academic IELTS
*AEC Screen Test Pass

In certain cases an interview with the TESOL coordinator will also be reauired.

● Course Timetable

A typical course runs for at least 5 weeks from Monday to Friday, 9 am – 3 pm with extra time required for homework, assignments and lesson preparation.

You will receive 2 certificates from AEC. One shows that you have successfully completed the TKT preparation course. The other certificate is your official report card with your marks for each section of the work done.

If you sit the external Cambridge TKT exam you will get separate certificates directly from Cambridge.

Course Content

Theoretical knowledge and practical skills for teaching English including:

a) Grammar, lexis, phonology
b) Teaching reading , listening , writing and speaking skills
c) Background language learning
d) Lesson planning, use of materials
e) Classroom management and student assessment

Dave Fern has a varied cross cultural background having lived and worked in Taiwan. He’s been teaching ESOL for 7 years at different levels and enjoys encouraging students in all aspects of life as well as in English.

Johanna Bissett has taught English for many years and has also helped train ESOL teachers. She has spent considerable time overseas and is passionate about helping students to have a rewarding and worthwhile English learning experience while in NZ

Tersia Naidoo has 13 years of teaching experience both in New Zealand and South Africa. She is passionate about teaching, meeting new students and helping students achieve their best in all spheres of life

Julie Rippon has taught for more than 20 years. She has been teaching ESOL for 11 years both overseas and New Zealand. She has been involved in teacher Training for the last 9 years and loves to trinees excel.
